The Roles and Responsibilities of the Media in the Kurdish Reconciliation Process

October 14, 2015 Malta Pavilion, Beşiktaş/ Istanbul

DS Centre for Policy Studies held a round table discussion on "The Roles and Responsibilities of the Media in the Kurdish Reconciliation Process"

DS Centre organized one of its sessional roundtable discussions on Wednesday October 14, 2015 in Istanbul. The event brought together academics, politicians, columnists and other media representatives to discuss and assess the current status of the Kurdish reconciliation process and in particular how the media could contribute to make the process more effective.

The event brought together academics, politicians, columnists and other media representatives to discuss and assess the current status of the Kurdish reconciliation process and in particular how the media could contribute to make the process more effective.

The event was invitation-only and completely off-the-record, touching on several key issues. In particular the event highlighted how, since the 1990s, the mainstream media has changed its discourse when discussing the Kurdish issue.

The roundtable discussions opened up the space for journalists and politicians to address some of the pressures and obstacles journalists face in areas with increased PKK activity and how to overcome these challenges. The event, which lasted four hours,  addressed both the present and future status of the Kurdish question from multiple perspectives and shed light on the political and social dimensions of the issue.
In addition, the discussions discussed the importance of the media’s role in the reconciliation process by pointing out that journalists have a duty to be ethical and responsible in their reporting. The event ended with a brief discussion on visions for the future and next steps.
